Between 1790 and 1793, William Blake revealed his Proverbs of Hell as part of his book, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. The original manuscript was printed from etched plates with dramatic illustrations that were colored by Blake and his wife, Catherine. The revolutionary spirit of the Proverbs reflects Blake's challenge to the conventional moral structures of organized religion .
Finding that the Proverbs still speak with a fiercely pertinent voice, I present them here, in combination with some of my photographs, in the hope that the words and images will encourage thought.
